Autumn colour in Southern Ontario doesn't get much better than this and this tree is located right outside my front door. We have, in my opinion, the loveliest tree on the block. The fall colours have been a bit muted this year but little rivals the Canadian maple tree for spectacular hues of orange, red, yellow and brown. The pumpkin producers have been complaining that there might not be enough pumpkins to go around for Hallowe'en. Apparently our cool, wet summer made for a poor harvest. You couldn't prove it by us though. I took this picture this morning at our local grocery store and the display was easily twice as big when I walked by on Friday. Somehow I don't think we are going to run out.
The big controversy this month has been about the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 (also known as the swine ) flu shot. The strain of both is supposed to be mild this year and I guess that's why some people are not getting either. I would ask you to think again about this if you have decided not to get either.
My husband and I managed to pick up a flu bug when we were away for the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. We probably had the 24 hour variety but we were sick enough and the lack of energy lasted for over a week after the flu symptoms went away. I am not so much concerned about me, although I don't want to get sick, but I am concerned about the people I come in contact with. I might escape with a mild does of the flu but it might be fatal for someone else.
I believe that the more people get both flu shots, the less people will end up in the hospital or just miserably sick at home. If you're afraid of needles, take a deep breath and close your eyes. The prick is hardly worth worrying about. And, an added bonus is that they're FREE!
Food for thought . . .

Your blog entry absolutely looks very Autumnish :-). Love it!
ReplyDeleteI remember when driving through Canada in September years ago I admired all the big displays of pumpkins. So lovely!! In NL we only have pumkins in the food section and here in C it's the same thing :-). So for me it's fun to see it in big amounts like on your picture!
Do you buy pumpkins at this time of the year yourself? To carve or prepare for pumpkin dishes?
I'm still not sure what to do with the flu shots. I'm not one to be afraid of needles or vaccinations or anything but I'm just not sure what is the right thing to do. I did have a flu bug in September as well...the 24 variety. But was that 'the one'?
In NL only the elderly and people with a certain health risk are able to get the flu shots until now. Overhere in C I'm not sure but I guess when I will go to a clinic and ask for one I will get one.
I think the governments worldwide should be more open about the whole H1N1 thing...it's all so vague and confusing!
I don't do the baking thing any more so I use two ceramic pumpkins that I made years ago. We couldn't light the outside one because it was so windy.
ReplyDeleteI carefully read all the news about the world situation of the H1N1 flu but they didn't mention deaths from the vaccine at all. The true statistics might put everything into perspective. People die from flu and from medicines every day. The truth would help us balance the benefits vs the risks. Some of the medication I take has horrible possible side effects but I have weighted the benefits and take it. We should have the facts to do the same with the flu shot.
I hope you'll stay healthy throughout this "flu season" from here on in. So far, my little family has been healthy(knock on wood)and here it is mostly the under 25 year olds and those with exsisting illness(most likely to get severe symptoms from H1N1) who are being allowed to get the somewhat scarce vaccine(Rachel gets hers on Monday at school) and I am not at all afraid of the vaccine. I agree with you that the more people who can vaccinated now, the better it will be for everyone...
ReplyDeleteBTW, beautiful orange images from your part of the world, Sandra.
ReplyDeleteThe autumn colors are gorgeous! I have been a tourist to your home town and it's wonderful....
